Las Vegas Aces rookie Kate Martin endured a frightening leg injury during Tuesday night's game, leaving her teammates deeply concerned for her well-being. The injury, described as a lower right leg injury, resulted in Martin's harrowing screams echoing across the court. Her teammates quickly rushed to her side, surrounding her and holding up towels to shield her from view during the 93-85 loss.
Aces coach Becky Hammon, though unable to provide an immediate update on Martin's condition, commended the rookie's resilience, stating that she is "freakin' tough." After the injury, Martin had to be assisted off the court by the training staff. However, following initial tests, she displayed remarkable strength and returned to the court in black sweatpants under her own power.
WNBA MVP favorite and Aces center A'ja Wilson expressed her dedication to supporting Martin, emphasizing that the team would protect their injured teammate. Wilson asserted, "She's one of us. She's our sister and someone that we will always depend and count on, but at the same time, cameras be getting in your business and we don't want that and don't need that. We try to protect her peace, her mental and just her emotion."
As Martin's former Iowa teammate Caitlin Clark can attest, the rookie has made a positive impact on her veteran teammates in a short span of time. Earlier in June, she experienced some rookie hazing when the team bus left without her. Wilson playfully posted on social media, "Don't be late to the bus," accompanied by laughing emojis.
Without Martin's presence on the court, the Aces' attempted comeback against the Sky fell short. The team now finds themselves battling for playoff seeding, currently sitting at 16-8 on the season, tying for the fourth-best record in the WNBA.
While the Las Vegas Aces await further updates on Kate Martin's condition, her teammates continue to rally around her, ensuring her well-being and offering unwavering support.
