LAKE COUNTY, Ill. - The Lake County Sheriff's Office is grieving the loss of K9 Dax, a decorated former sheriff's canine, who passed away on Friday. The 10-year-old German Shepherd served the department for nearly five years alongside his partner, Deputy John Forlenza.

K9 Dax joined the force in 2015 when he was just 13 months old. Throughout his career, he played a vital role in apprehending fleeing suspects and protecting the community. However, tragedy struck early this March when Dax sustained an injury while chasing down a suspect who had committed multiple felonies.

During the pursuit, Dax endured neck and spine injuries, temporarily paralyzing his hindquarters. His veterinarians identified cervical and thoracolumbar Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) and lumbosacral IVDD as contributing factors to his condition. Although Dax underwent extensive physical therapy, his retirement from active duty was deemed necessary as he would not be able to fully recover.

Sheriff John Idleburg expressed his deep sorrow over K9 Dax's passing, stating, "K9 Dax will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we are incredibly saddened by his loss. He will be remembered for the lives he saved, the apprehension of violent offenders, and his efforts in preventing drug distribution within our community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Forlenza family during this difficult time."

Over the years, Dax and Deputy Forlenza formed an exceptional bond, aiding in the successful location of over 400 missing endangered individuals and fleeing felons. Deputy Forlenza paid tribute to his loyal partner, remarking, "Dax's service cannot be adequately quantified or expressed. He has saved countless lives, including my own. I am proud to have been his handler and best friend for the past nine years."

Following his retirement, Dax found a loving home with Deputy Forlenza and his family. To honor his unwavering dedication, a ceremony was held on Wednesday, paying tribute to K9 Dax and his remarkable service to the people of Lake County.

K9 Dax will be dearly missed by the Lake County Sheriff's Office, the local community, and supporters nationwide. His legacy as a true hero, who tirelessly served his duties, will forever be remembered. Rest in peace, K9 Dax.
