In a shocking turn of events, Kansas Jayhawks' guard Elmarko Jackson has suffered a severe injury that will sideline him for an extended period. The announcement was made by KU men's basketball coach Bill Self during a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
Jackson tore his patellar tendon during a scrimmage at Self's youth camp on Tuesday at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena. The injury occurred when Jackson was driving to the basket and landed awkwardly after being hit. An MRI conducted by Kansas Team Health confirmed the tear, leading to the decision for Jackson to undergo surgery in the coming days.
Coach Self expressed his disappointment over the injury, acknowledging Jackson's significant progress during the offseason. He described the talented guard as having a tremendous spring and expressed confidence in his ability to overcome this setback.
Jackson, a former McDonald's All-American, had a promising freshman season with the Jayhawks, averaging 4.2 points per game. Although he initially started in the lineup, he later transitioned to a bench role during conference play. Despite some struggles offensively, Jackson showcased his potential with standout performances, including a breakout game against Baylor and a crucial defensive save during the NCAA Tournament.
Reflecting on this setback, Coach Self admitted that Jackson may have been thrust into a considerable role early on, considering his limited basketball experience prior to college. Nevertheless, the coach remains optimistic about Jackson's future and expects him to return stronger than ever.
The loss of Jackson undoubtedly poses a challenge for KU's backcourt depth. Coach Self had already been in search of another starting-caliber option, and now the need for a 12th scholarship player becomes more urgent. In the meantime, South Dakota State transfer Zeke Mayo is likely to shoulder additional responsibilities as a secondary ball handler alongside point guard Dajuan Harris Jr.
The road to recovery for Jackson is projected to be a lengthy one, with a full rehabilitation period estimated at around 12 months. While he will be able to assume non-contact basketball duties in the upcoming months, it will take time for him to fully regain his strength and agility.
The Jayhawks organization and fans alike are devastated by this unfortunate injury but remain hopeful for Jackson's successful recovery. With determination and hard work, Elmarko Jackson is expected to make a triumphant return to the court in due time.
