In a recent turn of events, Vice President Kamala Harris has seen a significant rise in popularity, narrowing the gap between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden after Biden's withdrawal from the race. According to the New York Times/Siena poll, Harris has surpassed Trump in a hypothetical matchup, indicating a shift in voter preferences.
The polls reveal that following the June 27 debate between Biden and Trump, voter engagement has increased significantly. With 64% of respondents now closely monitoring the race, up from 48% before the debate, Harris has emerged as a strong contender against Trump. An Emerson College survey showed Trump leading Harris by a narrow margin in four out of five battleground states, with the two tied in Wisconsin. Impressively, Harris performs better than Biden in all five states, including Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, and Wisconsin.
Moreover, the survey highlighted Democrats' growing enthusiasm for Harris, with nearly 80% of Democratic-leaning voters expressing a preference for Harris as the nominee compared to 48% favoring Biden three weeks ago. There is a stark contrast in perceptions of mental acuity, with 56% of respondents viewing Harris as "mentally sharp and capable of handling challenges," compared to 49% for Trump and 22% for Biden.
Following Biden's decision to end his campaign on July 21 and endorse Harris, a 19th News/SurveyMonkey poll indicated that 87% of Americans supported his choice. Furthermore, there is optimism that Harris's entrance into the race will benefit the Democratic Party, with 45% believing it will contribute positively compared to 29% for the Republican Party.
As Harris solidifies her position as the Democratic nominee, garnering support from Democratic governors and the majority of congressional Democrats, she is expected to be officially nominated in the first week of August. The Real Clear Politics' polling average indicates that Trump currently leads Harris by 1.9 points, showcasing a narrowing lead since Biden's exit from the race, suggesting a potentially competitive electoral landscape in the upcoming election.
