In a recent interview with CNN, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson shared her personal journey of navigating the challenges of balancing a demanding legal career while raising a child with special needs. Reflecting on her experience, Jackson expressed feelings of inadequacy during that time and revealed that she might have considered giving up her career if she had fully understood her daughter's challenges earlier.

Jackson spoke with CNN's Abby Phillip, discussing the struggles she and her family faced in understanding and meeting the needs of her eldest daughter, Talia, who was later diagnosed with mild autism spectrum disorder. Despite the difficulties and moments of uncertainty, Jackson believed that she ultimately made the right decisions for her family.

In her recently published memoir, "Lovely One," Jackson provides a relatable narrative of a young family managing high-pressure careers while raising their children. The book sheds light on Talia's academic giftedness but also her social interaction challenges and difficulties with transitions at school.

Now 54 years old, Jackson reflected on that challenging period in her life and acknowledged that there might have been moments of regret, but she firmly believes that individuals can achieve success and pursue their dreams despite the challenges they face within their families.

Justice Jackson, the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court, also shared her experiences of growing up in Miami and her transition to Harvard, where she found a sense of empowerment by connecting with other Black students. "It really was a way to allow me to bond with people who understood my background, my interests, my issues," shared Jackson.

When asked about the court's decision to end affirmative action, Jackson refrained from offering a detailed opinion, mentioning that she hadn't studied the issue closely. However, she expressed flattery when conservative Justice Clarence Thomas, the other Black justice on the court, engaged in a detailed disagreement with one of her dissents.

Joining the bench in 2022, Jackson arrived during a significant and divisive moment in the court's history following the Roe v. Wade decision. Acknowledging concerns over public confidence in the court, Jackson stressed the importance of maintaining precedent and considering settled expectations when making decisions.

Although she declined to predict the future of abortion rights, Jackson emphasized the need for careful and principled statutory interpretation, regardless of the political climate.

In another notable case involving the US Capitol rioters, Jackson explained that her decision to align with some of the court's conservatives was based on her interpretation of the law rather than political considerations.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's candid interview provides insight into the challenges of balancing career ambitions with family responsibilities, showcasing her resilience and determination to advocate for justice while facing personal obstacles.
