Jon Rahm, the two-time major champion, is making a comeback to LIV Golf Nashville this week after being forced to withdraw from his last two tournaments, including the U.S. Open, due to an infection on his left foot. The Spaniard, who won the 2021 U.S. Open and the 2023 Masters, had an infection between two toes that caused him to withdraw from LIV Golf's Houston event two weeks ago.
Rahm had initially expected to play at Pinehurst but ultimately decided to withdraw two days before the tournament, which was won by Bryson DeChambeau. Throughout his absence, Rahm has been managing the foot infection and taking precautions to prevent any worsening of the condition. Speaking during a media session at the LIV Golf Nashville tournament, Rahm commented on his recovery, stating, "The wound is still there but manageable now. I'm taking necessary steps to ensure it heals properly and doesn't happen again."
Despite having a solid record in LIV Golf events, with seven top-10 finishes, Rahm has been unable to secure a victory since his Masters triumph last year. However, the team he captains, Legion XIII, has emerged victoriously twice. Rahm is eager to return to competition and feels ready to perform, despite not being able to engage in much practice due to his foot condition. Expressing his enthusiasm, Rahm said, "I feel ready to walk and hit it. Just happy that I'm here."
Looking ahead, Rahm is scheduled to play in LIV Golf's Andalucia event in his native Spain the week before the British Open. While reflecting on the recent U.S. Open, Rahm congratulated his fellow LIV golfer DeChambeau on his victory but also expressed empathy for Rory McIlroy. Rahm highlighted the difficulty faced by McIlroy, particularly on the 18th hole where he missed a short putt, ultimately costing him a chance at victory.
Rahm shared his perspective on the putt, explaining that the broadcast had severely underplayed its difficulty. He mentioned that the slope on the green was such that hitting the putt left-center could result in being off the green. Appreciating the challenges of accurately conveying the course conditions in a short commentary window, Rahm mentioned, "I think that can happen a few times where unless you've been there on the golf course and you're playing it or you've played it, it's hard to truly explain how difficult the golf course can be, and a lot of times they only have those five seconds to say something quickly, so I also don't blame them."
Jon Rahm's return to competition at LIV Golf Nashville marks a significant moment in his journey to regain championship form following his foot infection. As he continues to manage the condition and take cautious steps towards future prevention, golf enthusiasts eagerly anticipate seeing him back in his winning stride on the course.
