In a recent visit to the southern border, JD Vance, a senator and former running mate of Donald Trump, expressed his views on securing the border and criticized Vice President Kamala Harris' approach to border security. Vance received a briefing from members of the border patrol union, a representative from the sheriff's department, and a local rancher. He emphasized the need for implementing common-sense policies to address the challenges at the border.

During his visit, Vance highlighted former President Donald Trump's proposed border policy, which included a pledge to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants and the construction of a border wall. He expressed confidence that these policies could withstand legal challenges, as the courts have affirmed the president's authority over border policy. Vance attributed the failure of Harris, whom he referred to as "border czar," to effectively coordinate the federal government's response to her lack of understanding of the federal government's power in this domain.

Harris, however, defended her record on border security, citing her experience prosecuting transnational drug cartels during her tenure as California's attorney general. She also criticized Trump for discouraging Republicans from supporting a bipartisan border security bill. In response to Vance's visit, several local officials who endorsed Harris accused him and Trump of blocking essential legislation aimed at improving border security.

During Vance's tour of the southern border, the Biden administration announced the return of imprisoned journalist Evan Gershkovich and Marine veteran Paul Whelan, following a major exchange with the Russian government. Vance expressed his relief at their safe return, using it as an opportunity to suggest that it signaled global concerns about the potential return of Trump to office.

In an interview preceding his visit, Vance acknowledged his earlier struggles as Trump's running mate and stood by his previous comments referring to Democratic leaders like Harris as "childless cat ladies." He reiterated his belief in being more "pro-family."

Vance's visit to the southern border marks another episode in the ongoing debate surrounding border security and immigration policies. As the discourse continues, both sides present their views on how best to address the challenges and ensure the safety and well-being of communities near the border.
