The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations has launched an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Cedar Rapids on Saturday evening. The incident took place at a residence on 31st Street NE after the Cedar Rapids Police Department received two separate 911 calls.

According to the police department, the first caller requested an officer to respond to their home, while the second caller requested a welfare check on the first caller. The second caller reported that the first caller was making suicidal and homicidal statements and was armed.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered both callers. The police conducted a high-risk approach to the first caller, who was armed with a weapon. When instructed to drop the weapon, the suspect instead raised it, prompting three officers to open fire.

The suspect was struck by the gunfire and subsequently fell to the ground. Emergency responders arrived promptly but were unable to save the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the suspect has not been released.

Unfortunately, the second caller also sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. They were immediately transported to the hospital for medical treatment. The identity of the second caller has not been disclosed.

Thankfully, none of the police officers involved in the shooting were injured. The Cedar Rapids Police Department has placed the three officers on critical incident leave as the investigation progresses. The names of the officers have also not been made public.

The Division of Criminal Investigation Major Crime Unit has been called upon to conduct an independent probe into the officer-involved shooting. Additionally, the Division of Criminal Investigation Laboratory Crime Scene Team has examined the scene for further evidence.

At this time, there is no known threat to the community related to the incident. Authorities continue to gather information and evidence to establish a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to the shooting.
