In a tragic incident on Sunday evening, a 50-year-old man, identified as Gideon Peri from Kedumin, was killed in an explosion that occurred on Lekhi Street in Tel Aviv. Authorities are currently investigating whether the explosion was the result of a terror attack, work accident, or criminal activity.
According to Central District Commander Perez Amer, numerous calls reporting a loud explosion and the presence of scattered body parts on Lehi Street were received by the emergency center. Upon arriving at the scene, the police discovered a mutilated body and evidence of an explosion on the wall.
Initially, police had difficulty in identifying the deceased individual but as Commander Perez Amer stated, it became clear that "it's not an innocent civilian, but rather the person who was carrying the explosive device." However, it is still too early to determine if the incident was criminal or terrorism-related.
Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedics found Gideon Peri unconscious and suffering from multiple systemic injuries. Sadly, they later pronounced him dead at the scene. A 33-year-old man was also injured in the explosion and was transported to Sourasky Medical Center for medical treatment. He is currently reported to be in moderate condition, with shrapnel injuries to his limbs and chest.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir expressed his condolences to the Peri family and emphasized the need to prevail against the "cruel enemy" that poses a threat on multiple fronts. Large police forces, along with the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), are actively involved in the ongoing investigation of the incident.
MDA paramedic Nitzan Faraj, who responded to the scene, described the situation as citizens reporting a loud explosion and encountering a truck on fire. Next to the burning vehicle, they found the unconscious body of a 50-year-old man with severe injuries. Unfortunately, medical tests confirmed that the victim had no pulse, leading to the pronouncement of his death at the scene.
Following a situation assessment, IDF Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot described the explosion as a "very severe attack." He extended his condolences to the Peri family and affirmed the determination to bring the perpetrator to justice, while also conducting a thorough investigation to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As the pursuit of the individual responsible continues, IDF forces, including special units, have strengthened their presence in the area. Blockades have been set up to prevent the escape of the suspect and ongoing efforts are being made to ensure the safety and security of the public.
While the investigation is still in progress, authorities are leaving no stone unturned as they examine all possible factors, including the possibility of a criminal incident or a terror attack. The incident serves as another tragic reminder of the need to remain vigilant and united against those who seek to bring harm to innocent lives.
