Injuries Plague Philadelphia Eagles as Training Camp Continues

The Philadelphia Eagles faced a slew of injuries as their training camp progressed, with several key players being limited in practice or sitting out altogether. One significant development was the return of C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who had been sidelined for four days due to a shoulder injury. Although he participated in practice on a limited basis, he did not partake in team drills.
Joining Gardner-Johnson in his return was Grant Calcaterra, who also returned to practice in a limited capacity after nursing a shoulder injury. However, like Gardner-Johnson, he refrained from participating in team drills. Another positive development was the inclusion of Cooper DeJean in some team drills, marking his first participation since the start of camp. The rookie, listed as limited on the injury report, showed improvement on his hamstring issue.
Oren Burks made his long-awaited comeback to practice since Day 1, albeit on a limited basis. He did not appear in team drills due to a knee problem. Parris Campbell continued to be limited in practice due to a groin issue, but he did manage to participate in some team drills.
Unfortunately, there were several players who did not take part in practice, including Tyler Steen, who was absent due to an ankle problem. Head coach Nick Sirianni provided minimal information, only stating that Steen was "working to get back," without expanding further. Gabe Hall, Matt Hennessy, E.J. Jenkins, Joseph Ngata, Caden Sterns, John Ross, and Johnny Wilson also missed practice due to various injuries.
Adding to the list of absentees, Albert Okwuegbunam missed his third consecutive practice due to an abdomen issue. However, it was a sigh of relief for the Eagles as Landon Dickerson, who displayed signs of discomfort during practice, was able to finish despite seeming to be in pain at one point.
In roster news, the team announced the placement of Tyler Hall on injured reserve, while Mekhi Garner was waived/injured. In a corresponding move, the Eagles re-signed Gottlieb Ayedze to the roster.
The quarterback battle for the backup position continues to heat up in training camp, with Kenny Pickett taking the QB2 reps instead of Tanner McKee. Pickett showcased moments of brilliance, displaying solid performance in 7-on-7 and completing a nice pass to Jacob Harris over the middle. However, the negatives outweighed the positives, as he struggled with decision-making and accuracy. On the other hand, McKee demonstrated better decision-making and quicker releases, although he wasn't flawless with a misfire to Austin Watkins.
As for the linebacker battle, Zack Baun and Devin White retained their spots as the first-team linebackers, but Nakobe Dean and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. also had the opportunity to work with the starters. Baun made an impact with a tackle for loss on a screen pass to Barkley, while Dean impressed with a powerful hit on Will Shipley during a 7-on-7 period.
In the cornerback battle, Isaiah Rodgers took the first-team reps alongside Darius Slay in 11-on-11 drills. This marked Rodgers' tenth day in a row, while Kelee Ringo had only participated for three days. Quinyon Mitchell occupied the first-team nickel cornerback slot, with Cooper DeJean on the second-team. However, the Eagles showcased a first-team look with DeJean in the slot and Mitchell and Ringo on the outside, potentially hinting at their top three cornerback options for the future.
The wide receiver battle for the third spot featured Britain Covey, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith, with Parris Campbell rotating in as well.
During the 1-on-1 drills between the offensive and defensive lines, Landon Dickerson impressively shut down Milton Williams. Trevor Keegan struggled against Williams, while Cam Jurgens fended off a bull rush from Jordan Davis. It was noteworthy that Nolan Smith's rush garnered praise from his teammates.
Rookie Jalyx Hunt had a standout practice, showcasing his ability to generate pressure off the edge and providing tight coverage that led to an incompletion for Pickett. His excellent play fired up both his teammates and the attending fans.
C.J. Uzomah had his best practice thus far, making two solid catches and showing signs of progress in training camp.
Before practice began, head coach Nick Sirianni addressed the team's kickoff coverage struggles, emphasizing their intention to work on the issue during practice. This was followed by special teams tackling drills early on.
The Philadelphia Eagles will resume practice tomorrow morning at 10 AM Eastern and have another practice session on Monday before a closed media-access walkthrough on Tuesday.
