Washington, D.C. - In a shocking incident on Monday afternoon, a D.C. Police captain was shot and injured in Northwest D.C., according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). The officer, who has been on the force for 18 years and holds the rank of captain, was driving to work in his personal vehicle when the incident occurred.
The shooting took place around noon in the vicinity of 7th Street and Oneida Place NW, just a few blocks away from the MPD's Fourth District station. D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith provided details during a news conference held later that day. Chief Smith stated that the injured officer noticed a car driving erratically, which suddenly stopped in front of his vehicle. One of the suspects then exited the car and fired at the officer, striking him.
Despite being wounded, the brave officer managed to make note of part of the suspect's license plate and promptly reported it to the police department before driving himself to the nearby Fourth District police station. From there, he was immediately transported to the hospital for medical attention. Fortunately, the officer's injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening.
MPD swiftly initiated a search for the suspects, who had fled the scene. The investigation led authorities to Landover, Maryland, where the suspect's vehicle crashed and overturned. Two men were apprehended and taken into custody at that location. It remains unclear at this time whether any of these individuals are directly linked to the shooting.
During the news conference, Chief Smith expressed the MPD's firm stance against such acts of violence, stating, "We will not tolerate this type of violence in our city." The department is determined to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of Washington, D.C. residents.
Meanwhile, the injured officer is currently recovering with his family at the hospital. His bravery and quick actions in providing crucial information to aid the investigation are being commended by his colleagues and the community.
