In a fiery speech during a House Rules Committee debate on foreign aid bills, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (Conn.), the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, expressed her frustration with the lower chamber's inaction in providing aid to Ukraine as it battles against the Russian invasion. DeLauro accused the House of "diddling around" while people are dying in Ukraine.

"We have the opportunity to do what we do here and that is to govern. And what are we doing in governing? To be a world leader," DeLauro passionately declared. She criticized the prolonged delay in providing the necessary aid to Ukraine, emphasizing that the country needs assistance urgently.

DeLauro called on the House to have swiftly passed additional aid to Ukraine and Israel when the Senate approved it earlier this year. "We should have picked up that Senate bill, brought it to the floor, and voted on it immediately," she added.

The issue of foreign aid has created a standoff in Congress, with lawmakers struggling to reach a consensus on providing additional assistance to Ukraine and Israel. Many Republicans have voiced their opposition to sending more aid to Ukraine, arguing that it will not significantly impact the country's fight against Russia.

However, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) proposed a solution to break the impasse. He suggested that the House should vote on four separate bills addressing aid for Ukraine, Israel, the Indo-Pacific, and other national security priorities. This proposal comes in the wake of Iran's recent attack on Israel, which has heightened concerns among lawmakers.

President Biden has expressed his support for Johnson's plan and urged Congress to pass the foreign aid bills this week. In a statement, Biden emphasized the importance of standing with allies and countering the threats posed by Iran and Russia.

"The House must pass the package this week, and the Senate should quickly follow. I will sign this into law immediately to send a message to the world: We stand with our friends, and we won't let Iran or Russia succeed," Biden stated.

The debate over foreign aid continues as lawmakers grapple with the urgency of providing support to Ukraine in its struggle against the Russian invasion. The House's handling of the aid package and its impact on U.S. foreign policy remains a contentious issue, with both Democrats and Republicans scrambling to find common ground and address the immediate needs of Ukraine and Israel.
