In a surprising turn of events, North Carolina Representative Don Davis, a House Democrat who had previously voted to "condemn" Vice President Kamala Harris over the US border crisis, has now endorsed her candidacy for the 2024 presidential election. Davis also urged Harris to consider North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper as her running mate. However, he did not hold back in criticizing the Biden administration for their handling of the immigration issue.
"The stakes of this presidential election are incredibly high, with far-reaching implications," Davis stated in a released statement on Friday. "At the same time, the administration and Congress must address the concerns of the southern border." He emphasized that these issues cannot be overlooked and that he will continue to advocate for comprehensive immigration reform, including securing the border and addressing other concerns affecting families in eastern North Carolina.
Interestingly, Davis, along with Democratic Representatives Jared Golden of Maine, Henry Cuellar of Texas, Yadira Caraveo of Colorado, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, and Mary Peltola of Alaska, had earlier voiced their discontent with Harris as their party's presumptive 2024 nominee. They all signed a nonbinding resolution, introduced by Republican Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, which strongly condemned President Biden's "border czar" for enabling a record-breaking number of migrants to enter the country unchecked, straining resources, and contributing to an increase in crime.
President Biden, responding to mounting pressure from high-ranking congressional Democrats and party donors after a lackluster debate performance against former President Donald Trump, announced on Sunday that he would step aside and endorsed Harris as his successor. Following this endorsement, media outlets and nonpartisan organizations have been retracting previous labels and mentioning of Harris' left-wing stances, such as support for eliminating Immigration and Customs Enforcement and decriminalizing illegal border crossings.
Recent reports have highlighted alarming trends at the US-Mexico border, including the entry of suspects on terror watchlists, criminal migrants evading authorities, and subsequent alleged murders of American women and girls. Additionally, there has been a significant increase in fentanyl and other drug trafficking.
As the 2024 presidential race gains momentum, it remains to be seen how Harris and the Biden administration will address the concerns raised by Democrats and Republicans alike regarding the border crisis. Davis' endorsement suggests a shift in perspective and a call for action on this pressing issue, which will undoubtedly be a focal point of the upcoming campaign.
