Homicide Investigation Underway after 2 Men Shot, 1 Killed on I-59

The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) has launched a homicide investigation following a shooting incident on I-59 South, near the First Ave North Exit ramp. Late Saturday evening, two men inside their vehicle sustained gunshot wounds, resulting in one fatality. The other victim was rushed to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The deceased victim has been identified as 25-year-old Javonte McDonald. BPD suspects that the shooting was a targeted attack, rather than a random act of violence. Preliminary investigations suggest that the shooting occurred on the interstate, with over a dozen rounds fired.

As of now, no suspects have been taken into custody. BPD is urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 205-254-1764.

The BPD East precinct officers swiftly responded to the scene upon receiving the report and discovered the two men wounded inside their vehicle. Tragically, despite their efforts, one victim succumbed to their injuries on-site.

Authorities are working diligently to gather more details about the incident, and further updates will be provided as and when they become available.
