**Harris Takes Lead Over Trump in Latest Iowa Poll**
Vice President Kamala Harris has surged ahead of former President Donald Trump in Iowa, securing a narrow lead in the latest poll reported by the Des Moines Register. The poll shows Harris with 47% of the support among likely voters, compared to Trump's 44%.
This marks a significant shift from the previous month's results, where Trump held a 4% lead over Harris. The new results, released by the Des Moines Register and Mediacom Iowa Poll, highlight a remarkable turnaround for Harris. "It's hard for anybody to say they saw this coming," noted pollster J. Ann Selzer, president of Selzer & Co. "She has clearly leaped into a leading position."
The poll, which included responses from 808 Iowa voters and has a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points, indicates that Harris's lead is notably driven by women voters. In particular, older women have shown increased support for Harris. Independent women voters backed Harris by a substantial 28-point margin, and senior women voters favored her 68% to Trump's 28%.
Despite Trump winning Iowa by significant margins in both 2016 and 2020, neither candidate has heavily focused their campaign efforts on the state this year. Instead, both have concentrated on seven key battleground states. Selzer attributes the shift in Iowa to dynamic changes in voter demographics, specifically age and gender.
As the election approaches, the support of women voters in Iowa could play a crucial role in determining the outcome.
