In a tense standoff with police on Monday morning, a gun-wielding man was shot outside a Target store in Woodbury, Minnesota. The incident occurred at the Target located off the Valley Creek Road exit of Interstate 494, prompting SWAT personnel to be dispatched to the scene and the store to be briefly put on lockdown, according to authorities.
The wounded man, believed to be around 50 years old, was swiftly attended to by emergency medical personnel who transported him to Regions Hospital. At present, his identity and condition have not been released to the public. A news conference has been scheduled by the police for 3 p.m. on Monday to provide further updates.
Following the incident, one Woodbury police officer and one Washington County deputy involved have been placed on standard administrative leave, as per police protocol. The officers had initially been alerted to a vehicle in the Target parking lot that had stolen license plates. Upon their approach to arrest the suspect, a physical altercation ensued, leading the officers to observe that the suspect was armed with a handgun. Sensing the potential danger, the officers disengaged, but the suspect barricaded himself inside the vehicle.
SWAT personnel were called in and attempted negotiations with the armed man. As he continued to disregard law enforcement's commands and failed to cooperate, officers resorted to using "less than lethal" weapons. Eventually, the suspect exited his vehicle and pointed his handgun in the direction of the responding officers. In response to the immediate threat, the officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect.
During the incident, Allura Lindquist's mother, Fiona Lindquist, was inside the Target store. Upon hearing about the situation, Fiona took cover at the back of the store, away from any windows, ensuring her safety. Once the lockdown was lifted, Allura had to retrieve her mother as her car was parked directly across from the suspect's vehicle, making it part of the crime scene.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the full circumstances leading up to the standoff. As more information becomes available, it will be shared during the scheduled news conference later today.
