**Guardians Set to Face Yankees in ALCS Showdown**
The Guardians are once again preparing for playoff baseball at Yankee Stadium, fresh off their decisive Game 5 victory over the Tigers on Saturday. Their next challenge begins Monday night at Yankee Stadium, as they take on the Yankees in the American League Championship Series (ALCS).
This year's Guardians squad brings some formidable strengths to the series, including the league's best bullpen from the regular season, highlighted by dominant closer Emmanuel Clase. Additionally, the team's lineup features long-underrated star third baseman, Jose Ramirez, who provides both power and speed. Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the Guardians' consistent, solid play throughout the season, particularly their effective bullpen, strong defense, and balanced offensive attack.
The Yankees hold a slight edge in their regular-season matchups, having gone 4-2 against the Guardians. They took two of three games at Progressive Field in April and repeated the feat in The Bronx in August. However, they will need to win four out of seven games in this series to secure their first World Series appearance since 2009.
Boone had yet to decide on the Game 1 starter come Saturday afternoon, with Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt as the likely candidates. Gerrit Cole is expected to pitch in Game 2 on Tuesday. The series will move to Progressive Field for Games 3-5 from Thursday to Saturday, with potential Games 6 and 7 returning to Yankee Stadium.
First-year Guardians manager Stephen Vogt recognized the challenge ahead, praising the Yankees' talent and determination. In the ALDS, the Guardians utilized starters such as Tanner Bibee, Alex Cobb, and Matthew Boyd, with Cobb on track to start Game 1 of the ALCS. Joey Cantillo and Gavin Williams are additional options for a fourth starter.
The real strength of the Guardians lies in their bullpen, which posted a stellar 2.57 ERA during the regular season. Clase, in particular, had an extraordinary year, allowing just five earned runs over 74 ¹/₃ innings for a 0.61 ERA. Notably, the Yankees managed to snag one of Clase's three blown saves this season, thanks to Anthony Volpe's game-tying double in April.
In the ALDS, the Guardians' bullpen maintained a 3.16 ERA over 25 ²/₃ innings, with rookie righty Cade Smith making a significant impact. Ramirez has proven to be a handful for Yankees ace Cole, boasting a .391 batting average and a 1.283 OPS against him.
Boone commended Vogt for his impressive handling of the Guardians after succeeding future Hall of Famer Terry Francona. Boone noted Vogt's effective use of the bullpen and apt platoon management, key factors in the Guardians' success this season.
As the two teams gear up for the ALCS, fans can expect a gripping series with both sides equipped to make a strong push towards the World Series.
