The New York Giants are leaving no stones unturned as they gear up for the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF) lead draft analyst Trevor Sikkema, the Giants are "desperate" to secure their quarterback of the future with their first selection in the draft.
The uncertainty surrounding current quarterback Daniel Jones seems to have prompted this urgency. While Jones has shown flashes of potential, his inconsistent performance and failure to take the team to new heights have left the Giants questioning their future at the position. Despite giving him an extension, doubts have now crept in about the decision.
Sikkema believes that the Giants are looking to learn from their mistakes and find a long-term solution at quarterback. The analyst suggests that all four top quarterbacks in this class - Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy, and Jayden Daniels - would rank ahead of any quarterback available in the 2025 draft class.
"Quinn Ewers, Shadeur Sanders, Carson Beck, those players would all have been outside the Big Four, if you will, in this class," Sikkema remarked. With such promising talent available, the Giants are keen to avoid a situation where they miss out on the opportunity to acquire their preferred quarterback.
While Sikkema acknowledges that a trade-up scenario to the fourth overall pick with the Arizona Cardinals may be necessary, he believes the Giants are prepared to make the move if it means securing their desired prospect. The team is aware that having a strong quarterback is vital for competing in the division and ultimately winning a Super Bowl.
Another factor that might be driving the Giants' desperation is the long-term job security of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. Sikkema raises the point that selecting a quarterback in this draft could extend their tenure by providing a potential future franchise leader.
Given the pressure to succeed this year, Schoen and Daboll need the team to show significant progress. If Jones fails to improve, their job security could be at risk. Drafting a young quarterback, one they can develop and put their faith in, could serve as a lifeline for the Giants' current regime, according to Sikkema.
As the Giants approach the draft, their sights are firmly set on finding their quarterback of the future. The desperation to secure a top-tier prospect and extend the job security of the front office and coaching staff is driving their decision-making.
With the number six overall pick and the potential for trade-ups, the Giants are in a prime position to make a move. As the 2024 NFL Draft draws near, all eyes will be on New York to see how they execute their plan and potentially secure a franchise-altering quarterback.
