78 Billion

In a major operation, German investigators have seized a record-breaking 39 tons of cocaine, with an estimated value of more than $2.78 billion. The massive drug bust involved multiple container ships, and seven individuals have been arrested in what authorities are calling the largest cocaine seizure in the country's history.

The seizure took place last year after German prosecutors received a tip from Colombian authorities. Approximately 27.5 tons of cocaine were found in the port of Hamburg, another 8.8 tons in the Dutch port of Rotterdam, and nearly 3.3 tons in Colombia. The investigation led to the recent arrests of seven suspects, aged between 30 and 54, who come from various nationalities including Germany, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Morocco, Turkey, and Ukraine.

The suspects are accused of coordinating the transportation of 10 sea containers filled with large quantities of cocaine from Latin America to Europe. It is alleged that they used front companies set up for this purpose, with some accomplices believed to be residing in Turkey. German privacy rules prohibit the disclosure of the suspects' identities.

The state justice minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Benjamin Limbach, praised the successful operation during a news conference in Duesseldorf, stating that this was the largest cocaine seizure ever on European soil. Limbach described it as a significant blow to international organized criminality, dealing a precise punch to the drug lords.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser also celebrated the seizure, emphasizing the detrimental impact of the cocaine trade on society. She stated that the influx of cocaine into Europe not only destroys lives but also generates billions in profits for the cartels.

This historic seizure comes in the wake of Europol's announcement regarding the arrest of approximately 40 individuals involved in a major drug smuggling ring. As part of a years-long operation, Europol seized eight tons of cocaine. The cartel, whose leaders were based in Turkey and Dubai, suffered a significant setback with a final wave of arrests.

Europol released footage showcasing the intense efforts of law enforcement officers and K-9 dogs in uncovering bags of suspected narcotics. The footage also highlights the interception of a boat at sea, with officers unloading bags believed to contain drugs.

The joint efforts of German investigators and Europol serve as a clear message to drug cartels that illegal activities will not go unpunished. The successful operation not only disrupts the supply chains of cocaine but also deals a severe blow to the profits and power of criminal organizations.
