French authorities have raised preliminary terrorism charges against an 18-year-old individual who was allegedly planning a terrorist attack targeting spectators attending soccer games at the upcoming Paris Olympics. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, is believed to have been working on behalf of the Islamic State group's jihadist ideology.
The national counterterrorism prosecutor's office released a statement on Friday, stating that the man had been preparing a "violent action" aimed at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium in Saint-Etienne. The stadium is set to host several soccer matches during the Summer Games, and the planned attack was intended to target both spectators and police forces.
The interior minister, Gerald Darmanin, confirmed that the suspect, who hails from Chechnya, was apprehended by members of the General Directorate of Internal Security on May 22. The teenager is currently being held in custody for further investigation.
This is reportedly the first thwarted plot against the Paris Olympics, which are scheduled to commence in eight weeks. With France on its highest threat alert level, security concerns surrounding the Games are of paramount importance.
While the interior minister did not explicitly mention any specific security threats against the soccer events, he acknowledged the potential risks posed by various groups, including Islamic extremists, violent environmental activists, far-right groups, and even cyberattacks from adversaries like Russia.
The Paris Olympics organizing committee has been informed of the arrest and has expressed their gratitude towards the intelligence and security services. Emphasizing the priority placed on security, they assured the public that they are working closely with the Interior Ministry and other stakeholders to ensure the safety of the Games.
Given the high security concerns, plans for the exceptional opening ceremony are being carefully reviewed. With over 100 world leaders expected to attend, the opening ceremony involves a 6-kilometer open-air parade along the Seine River and large crowds watching from the embankments. French President Emmanuel Macron has even suggested moving the ceremony to the national stadium if the security threat is deemed too high.
To mitigate potential security risks, the French government has scaled back its original plans for the Games. The number of spectators has been reduced to around 300,000, less than half of the initially expected 600,000. Moreover, due to security concerns, access to the opening ceremony will now be by invitation-only, with tourists not granted free access as originally intended.
As the countdown to the Paris Olympics continues, extra security measures are being implemented, including for the Olympic torch relay. On Friday, the torch passed through the popular tourist destination of Mont-Saint-Michel, with increased security measures in place.
The French government and security forces remain vigilant in their efforts to ensure the safety and success of the upcoming Paris Olympics.
