In a move aimed at ensuring stability and continuity as France prepares to host the Paris Olympics at the end of the month, French President Emmanuel Macron accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal on Tuesday. However, Attal will continue to head a caretaker government until a new prime minister is appointed.
According to a statement released by the president's office, Macron has "accepted" the resignation of Attal and other ministers. During this transitional period, the current government members will be responsible for handling day-to-day affairs until a new government is formed.
The decision comes after the recent parliamentary elections, which resulted in no dominant political bloc in power for the first time in France's modern Republic. As a result, there is no fixed timeline for Macron to appoint a new prime minister.
The caretaker government, led by Attal, will focus solely on addressing immediate priorities and ensuring the smooth running of the country, with a particular emphasis on preparations for the upcoming Paris Olympics. The opening session of the National Assembly, France's powerful lower house of parliament, is scheduled for Thursday.
The unique circumstances also allow Attal to take up his seat as a lawmaker and lead Macron's centrist allies in the National Assembly. Under normal circumstances, government members are prohibited from being lawmakers. Additionally, the resignation of Attal and the formation of a caretaker government protect him from facing a no-confidence vote, as a caretaker government cannot be subject to such a vote.
In a statement, President Macron called upon all Republican forces to work together in order to bring an end to this transitional period as swiftly as possible. He emphasized the need for unity and collaboration around projects and actions that will serve the French people's interests.
As the nation eagerly anticipates the Paris Olympics, which will commence later this month, the caretaker government will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth execution of the prestigious event. Amidst the absence of a dominant political bloc, the caretaker government's primary focus is to ensure the stability and well-being of the nation during this transitional period.
In the coming weeks, President Macron will be tasked with appointing a new prime minister who will lead the government forward and address the challenges facing the country. Until then, the caretaker government will work diligently to safeguard the interests of the French people and make necessary preparations for the Paris Olympics.
