In a groundbreaking case, a former assistant principal at Richneck Elementary School in Virginia has been indicted in connection with the high-profile shooting of a teacher by a 6-year-old student. The indictment marks the first time an administrator has been charged in relation to the handling of a school shooting.

The indictment, which includes eight counts of child abuse, was issued by a special grand jury in Newport News on March 11. This comes over a year after the shooting took place and gained national attention due to the young age of the shooter. Court records, recently made public, reveal the charges against Ebony Parker.

Newport News Commonwealth's Attorney Howard E. Gwynn formed an 11-person special grand jury in April to investigate any actions or omissions by current or former employees of the Newport News School System that may have contributed to the Richneck shooting.

The incident unfolded on January 6, 2023, when the 6-year-old boy brought a gun to school in his backpack after taking it from his mother's unsecured purse at home. Zwerner's lawsuit claims that she informed Parker earlier that day about the child's violent behavior and threats. Several students subsequently reported that the boy had a gun, but Parker allegedly failed to take appropriate action, dismissing the concerns based on the size of the boy's pockets.

Around 2 p.m., the boy fired a single shot at Zwerner as she was teaching in her first-grade classroom. Zwerner exhibited quick thinking and managed to evacuate all her students before being rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. She has since been released and is recovering at home after multiple surgeries. The 6-year-old shooter was apprehended by a teacher and is now under the care of his great-grandfather.

The Richneck shooting sparked outrage among parents and teachers, who criticized school officials and the district's approach to handling the incident as well as other instances of violence that occurred in Newport News schools within a short time span.
