Their decision has been motivated by their strong concerns over Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

In a widely reported statement, 83-year-old Cheney emphasized the unprecedented threat he believes Trump poses to the republic, stating, "In our nation's 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again."

Cheney's principled stance aligns with his belief in putting the country above partisanship and defending the Constitution. Asserting his duty as a citizen, Cheney declared that he will cast his vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.

This announcement follows Liz Cheney's recent endorsement of the Democratic nominee, which has caused ripples within the Republican Party. Liz Cheney, a former Wyoming Republican representative, has been a vocal critic of Trump since the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Her outspoken opposition to Trump ultimately led to her loss of congressional seat.

In response to the Cheneys' support, Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her gratitude, calling them "well respected" leaders who have prioritized loyalty to their country over their party. Harris emphasized the need to move past divisiveness and unite the nation, stating, "It's time to turn the page on the divisiveness. It's time to bring our country together, chart a new way forward."

Unsurprisingly, Trump took to the newly launched Truth Social to express his criticism of the Cheneys. He labeled former Vice President Cheney as an "irrelevant RINO" (Republican in name only) and dismissed Liz Cheney in the same manner. Trump's undeterred support for himself comes as no surprise given his ongoing rift with the Cheneys.

The Cheneys' endorsement of Harris is not an isolated incident within the Republican Party. Other prominent Republicans such as former Illinois Representative Adam Kinzinger, former Trump White House national security official Olivia Troye, and former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham have also expressed their disillusionment with Trump's leadership. These individuals spoke at the Democratic National Convention last month, sharing their concerns and reservations about Trump's style of governance.

The Cheneys' decision to back Vice President Kamala Harris serves as another indication of the fissures and divisions within the Republican Party. With the 2022 midterm elections looming, the political landscape continues to evolve, making it uncertain how these endorsements may impact the political dynamics moving forward. As the nation grapples with issues of unity and partisanship, the voices of prominent figures like the Cheneys will undoubtedly shape the narrative leading up to future elections.
