In a recent event held by the far-right Moms for Liberty organization in Washington, D.C., former President Donald Trump responded to a question about working with his adult children in both business and politics. During his remarks, he expressed his wish to appoint his daughter Ivanka Trump as the "United Nations secretary."
Although the United Nations does have a secretary-general, who is currently António Guterres of Portugal, this position is chosen by the General Assembly and not by the President of the United States. Trump's statement has left many puzzled, as the role of "United Nations secretary" does not exist.
Reflecting on his past experience working with his children, Trump spoke fondly of Ivanka, describing her as a "great" individual with exemplary qualities. He highlighted her academic success, her work ethic, and her former fashion line as indications of her potential to excel in various fields.
Trump revealed that he had encouraged Ivanka to pursue a role at the United Nations. He believed that she would be a formidable Ambassador to the organization, emphasizing that there would be no competition against her in that position. However, it is important to note that while presidents can appoint U.S. ambassadors to the United Nations, they lack the authority to appoint the secretary-general.
While Trump expressed admiration for his children's capabilities, he also admitted that he was hesitant to involve them in the political sphere due to what he perceived as unfair scrutiny. While Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner served as advisors in the Trump White House, the former president does not see himself continuing to engage in similar political partnerships involving his children.
It remains unclear why Trump twice mentioned the title of "United Nations secretary," despite the absence of such a position within the purview of the President. Nonetheless, his desire to see his daughter play a prominent international role has garnered attention and raised eyebrows.
As the Trump family continues to have a presence in politics and business, with Lara Trump co-chairing the Republican National Committee and Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump leading the Trump Organization, the former president's remarks shed light on his deep-rooted support for his children and their involvement in various endeavors.
While Ivanka Trump's potential appointment as "United Nations secretary" may remain a hypothetical scenario, Trump's sentiment underscores the influence his family has had on his political career and their continued involvement in public life.
