In a recent interview with television host Dr. Phil, former President Donald J. Trump made bold claims without evidence, accusing President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris of denying him adequate Secret Service protection. Trump suggested that their actions were partially responsible for the assassination attempt against him last month.

During the interview, Trump asserted that his team consistently fought for increased security measures, including more Secret Service personnel, while he was in office. He contended that Biden was aware of the insufficiencies in his protection and therefore bears some responsibility for the attack. Trump further blamed Harris, adding, "They weren't too interested in my health and safety. They brought in the whole D.O.J. to try and get me. They were weaponizing government against me."

The Secret Service has faced scrutiny since July 13, when a gunman was able to fire shots at Trump during an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. While the attack resulted in a grazing wound to Trump's ear, it tragically claimed the life of a spectator and left two others seriously injured. The FBI is currently investigating the incident, and congressional leaders have initiated inquiries as well. However, there is no evidence to suggest that Biden or Harris were aware of any security deficiencies concerning Trump's protection.

Following the security lapses, Kimberly A. Cheatle resigned as the director of the Secret Service, making way for new leadership within the agency. Trump's recent statements to Dr. Phil mirrored his previous social media post from July, where he also blamed Biden and Harris for the shooting and accused them of failing to safeguard his well-being.

Additionally, Trump echoed the allegations made by his allies, including Senator JD Vance of Ohio, who claimed that the Democrats' criticism of Trump and characterization of him as a threat to democracy might have incited the gunman. However, investigators have not confirmed the motive behind the attack.

When Dr. Phil asked Trump if he believed that Biden and Harris were okay with the possibility of him being shot, the former president replied, "They're saying I'm a threat to democracy. No, they're a threat. That was a standard line, just keep saying it, and you know that can get assassins or potential assassins going. Maybe that bullet is because of their rhetoric.”

It is essential to note that Trump's history includes instances of aggressive rhetoric, such as suggesting that his supporters attack protesters during his 2016 campaign. More recently, he embraced the Capitol rioters in January 2021 and made alarming claims about the potential outcome of a Democratic victory.

During the hour-long interview with Dr. Phil, Trump also criticized Harris replacing Biden as the Democratic nominee, stating that it was unfair to have a new opponent in the middle of a political campaign.

Furthermore, Trump expanded on his unsubstantiated claims about voter fraud, even going as far as suggesting that he would have won heavily Democratic California if there had been an honest vote count. However, California overwhelmingly voted for Biden by a margin of nearly 30 percentage points in the 2020 election.

As the presidential election draws closer, these controversial statements by Trump continue to stir debate. It remains to be seen how these accusations will impact the public's perception of the current administration as the campaigns unfold.
