In a surprising turn of events, former President George W. Bush has announced that he will not be endorsing any candidates for the upcoming 2024 presidential election. When asked about his endorsement on November 5, both Bush and his wife Laura responded with a straightforward "No," according to NBC News. The former Republican president cited his retirement from presidential politics years ago as the reason behind his decision.
This refusal to endorse a candidate is not a new trend for Bush. In both the 2016 and 2020 elections, he abstained from endorsing either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton and later, Trump or President Joe Biden. In a recent interview with People in 2021, Bush revealed that he had informed Condoleezza Rice of his endorsement, but she had declined to accept the office.
Interestingly, in the two elections following his presidency, Bush did endorse Republican candidates. He supported John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2012, both of whom ultimately lost to Barack Obama.
Meanwhile, Bush's former Vice President Dick Cheney has publicly thrown his support behind Kamala Harris, the current Vice President. Cheney's daughter, former Rep. Liz Cheney, revealed this endorsement during an event at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin. Liz Cheney explained that her father views Donald Trump as a grave threat to democracy, stating, "There has never been an individual in our country who is as grave a threat to our democracy as Donald Trump is."
Trump, unsurprisingly, did not take kindly to Cheney's endorsement, criticizing both Dick and Liz Cheney as "RINOs" (Republicans in name only) on his social media platform, Truth Social. Despite the backlash, Dick Cheney stuck to his stance, asserting that Trump can never be trusted with power again and highlighting the urgency of defending the Constitution.
Joining her father's sentiments, Liz Cheney also voiced her concerns about Trump's danger to the United States. She made it clear that, as a conservative and someone who deeply values the Constitution, she will not be voting for Trump and will instead cast her vote for Kamala Harris.
As the 2024 presidential election draws nearer, the political landscape is becoming more complex, with prominent figures like George W. Bush refusing to endorse candidates while others, like Dick Cheney, publicly announcing their support for Harris. These developments highlight the divisions within the Republican Party and the ongoing debates about the future direction of American politics.
