Former NFL and Canadian Football League running back Cierre Wood has been sentenced to life in prison following a plea agreement with prosecutors over the tragic death of his girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter in Las Vegas. The sentence was handed down on Tuesday, marking a significant turning point in the case that has captivated attention since April 2019.

According to reports from The Associated Press, Wood, now 33 years old, received a sentence of life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 10 years. This came following his guilty plea in April to charges of second-degree murder and felony child abuse. Clark County District Court Judge Jacqueline Bluth also ordered that Wood serve between 28 months and six years for the felony child abuse charge, which will be served consecutively.

The heartbreaking incident unfolded when La'Rayah Davis, the young daughter of Wood's girlfriend, Amy Taylor, was discovered lifeless in Wood's apartment on April 9, 2019. The family had recently moved into Wood's residence just under two weeks prior to the incident. In June 2019, both Wood and Taylor were indicted on charges of murder and 20 counts of felony child abuse.

During the investigation, both Wood and Taylor admitted to using physical exercise and punishment as disciplinary measures. An autopsy revealed that Davis had suffered from extensive injuries, including 20 newly broken ribs, internal bleeding, a lacerated liver, bruises on her heart, diaphragm, and connective tissue.

As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed the remaining felony child abuse charges that Wood was facing. In an Alford plea, Wood maintained his innocence but acknowledged that there was enough evidence for a conviction.

In a separate development earlier this year, Taylor also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse as part of her own plea agreement with prosecutors.
