The Fontana Police Department has made public the body camera footage from a February incident in which an officer shot and injured a man who allegedly assaulted another officer. The incident occurred during a traffic stop in Yucaipa on February 9, involving 56-year-old Alan Metka.
The released video, captured from the body cameras of both officers involved, provides a detailed account of the encounter. It begins with the "primary officer" engaging Metka after pulling him over for driving without a front license plate and tinted windows. During their conversation, Metka disclosed his criminal history, revealing that he had served 11 months in prison for possessing explosives.
The primary officer proceeded to ask Metka if there were any illegal items inside his vehicle, to which Metka denied. After Metka exited the vehicle as instructed, the primary officer directed him to speak with the "secondary officer". Again, the secondary officer asked Metka if he had any illegal items or weapons, and he once again denied having any.
Following a brief moment away in his patrol vehicle, the primary officer returned to find the secondary officer conducting a pat-down on Metka. In her body camera footage, she discovered an object in Metka's front-right pocket, which he identified as a gun. The situation quickly escalated into a struggle as Metka reached for the firearm, eventually putting the secondary officer in a headlock.
Panicking, the secondary officer shouted that Metka had a gun, prompting the primary officer to repeatedly demand that he release her. When Metka refused, the primary officer fired a single shot at him, inflicting an injury. The video captured Metka lying on the ground in a pool of blood, audibly moaning in pain.
Fontana Police Chief Michael Dorsey confirmed that Metka received immediate medical aid at the scene before being transported to a local hospital. Despite his injuries, Metka survived and is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
Both officers involved in the incident emerged unharmed, while Metka's firearm was recovered at the scene. Chief Dorsey further revealed that Metka has an extensive criminal history, including multiple arrests related to weapons possession and assault.
The San Bernardino District Attorney's Office is currently investigating the incident, which remains ongoing as Metka awaits trial. The release of the body camera footage aims to provide transparency and facilitate a thorough examination of the events leading up to the shooting.
