### Ukrainian War Reporter Andriy Tsaplienko: A Hero on the Front Lines
This week on 60 Minutes, Holly Williams of CBS News spotlighted Andriy Tsaplienko, a distinguished reporter for Ukraine's 1+1 news outlet, known for his fearless journalism amidst the escalating conflict with Russia. Revered as both a source of critical information and a national hero, Tsaplienko has risked his life to bring the truth to his fellow Ukrainians, embodying the sacrifices many are willing to make to preserve their young democracy.
Williams and producer Erin Lyall first encountered Tsaplienko in the summer of 2021 aboard a U.S. Navy warship in the Black Sea. At that time, the focus was on the cooperation between U.S. military forces and NATO allies in anticipation of a potential Russian threat. However, Tsaplienko’s approach to his reporting aimed to educate Ukrainians on what a modern military looks like, showcasing aspects such as living quarters, gym facilities, and a naval cafeteria complete with an ice cream machine. “I wanted to give Ukrainians hope that we are not alone," Tsaplienko explained.
When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Tsaplienko teamed up with photographer Ruslan Galushchak. Galushchak noted Tsaplienko's widespread recognition and his humility despite his fame. One particularly harrowing experience occurred in Chernihiv, where they found themselves in the middle of a Russian attack. Galushchak’s quick thinking – instructing everyone to hit the ground – likely saved their lives as shrapnel from the barrage punched through everything around them. Tsaplienko was injured by a piece of shrapnel that narrowly missed vital arteries in his leg, an outcome he deemed incredibly lucky.
Garlushchak and Tsaplienko managed to deliver a report on their ordeal even after Tsaplienko was rushed to the hospital. Garlushchak, now in his 50s, has since been drafted into the Ukrainian military and serves on the front line, operating a Humvee for a combat drone unit. Despite the continuous dangers, including a close call involving a Russian FPV drone, Garlushchak speaks fondly of his time working with Tsaplienko, describing it as one of the best periods of his life. Tsaplienko holds his friend in high esteem, calling him an "amazing professional," though Garlushchak humbly downplays his own skills.
The recent profile of Tsaplienko not only highlights his bravery and dedication as a journalist but also underscores the profound personal risks faced by those who strive to keep the world informed about the realities of the conflict in Ukraine.
