In a surprising turn of events, Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, has pleaded guilty to a third DWI charge on Tuesday. The incident occurred on February 3, when Mahomes Sr. was arrested during a traffic stop at around 8:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of W. Gentry Pkwy for driving while intoxicated.

According to the arresting officer, there was evidence obtained during the stop that led to the DWI charge. Originally scheduled for trial, Mahomes Sr. made the decision to enter a guilty plea instead. As a result, he is expected to receive a five-year probation with intense supervision for the first year. However, if he fails to comply with the terms of his probation, he could potentially face up to 10 years in prison.

In the state of Texas, a DWI charge for a third time or more is classified as a third-degree felony. Individuals convicted of a third-degree felony may face a prison sentence ranging from two to 10 years, as well as a fine not exceeding $10,000, as stated in the Texas Penal Code.

Moreover, Mahomes Sr. is also scheduled for a pre-trial hearing in October for driving with an invalid license, adding to his legal troubles. The arrest affidavit reveals that during the traffic stop, an open 16 oz. beer can was found in the console of his vehicle, and Mahomes Sr. admitted to consuming "a few beers" at a bar. Additionally, the document states that a field sobriety test performed on Mahomes Sr. showcased evidence of intoxication. It was also noted that the registration on his vehicle had been expired since September 2022.

This is not the first time that Mahomes Sr. has faced legal consequences related to a DWI charge. In 2019, he was sentenced to 40 days in jail for a second or subsequent DWI offense. Court records indicate that he fulfilled this sentence by serving weekends.

The news of Mahomes Sr.'s guilty plea has undoubtedly cast a shadow over the Mahomes family, as Patrick Mahomes II continues to establish himself as one of the NFL's most promising quarterbacks. It remains to be seen how this latest development will impact the family and Patrick Mahomes II's career moving forward.
