Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating a tragic shooting incident that took place in southern Iowa early on Thursday morning. According to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the shooting occurred at approximately 3:19 a.m. at Bootleggers Bar and Grill, located on Broadway Street in Clearfield.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies from the Taylor County Sheriff's Office discovered the lifeless body of 19-year-old Colby Nelson, a resident of Lenox, who had suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

Alan Schultz, a 37-year-old individual hailing from Bedford, has been taken into custody without any resistance and subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Schultz was found standing near the victim's body and reportedly admitted to being the shooter when questioned by a responding deputy. Witnesses present at the scene also identified Schultz as the perpetrator.

Investigation findings, detailed in the criminal complaint, revealed that Schultz and Nelson had a disagreement inside the bar earlier in the evening, which escalated into another altercation outside as Schultz prepared to leave. It is alleged that Schultz rode his motorcycle back to Bedford and retrieved a loaded handgun from his residence before returning to the bar in Clearfield, this time in a different vehicle.

Schultz allegedly confronted Nelson and a group of individuals in the street, situated in front of the establishment, before retrieving the gun from his vehicle. The criminal complaint further states that Schultz fired a single round, fatally hitting Nelson in the face. Following the shooting, Schultz unloaded the handgun, placing it on the ground, and waited for deputies to arrive.
