The family of Dvontaye Mitchell is seeking answers and accountability for his untimely death, which occurred more than a week ago at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. Mitchell, a 43-year-old Black man, died after he was detained by security guards at the hotel. Disturbing video footage has emerged showing Mitchell being held on the ground by multiple people prior to his death.
Attorney Ben Crump, who is representing Mitchell's family, is raising concerns about the use of force and the response of security personnel during mental health emergencies. In the video, Mitchell can be heard pleading for help while guards restrain him, instructing him to stay down and stop fighting. When police officers arrived on the scene, they found Mitchell unresponsive.
Crump's statement highlighted the disturbing nature of Mitchell's death, drawing comparisons to the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020. Floyd, a Black man, died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for over nine minutes. The officer, Derek Chauvin, was ultimately found guilty of Floyd's murder.
According to the Milwaukee Police Department, Mitchell's struggle with security guards outside the Hyatt Regency Hotel on 333 W. Kilbourn Ave began sometime after 3 p.m., leading to his eventual death. A witness reported seeing three to four security guards with their knees on Mitchell's neck and back, with one of them allegedly striking him in the head.
Video footage circulating online appears to show a group of security guards using their body weight against Mitchell, who is held face-down on the pavement. The police have stated that Mitchell entered a business and caused a disturbance before fighting with security guards who were escorting him out. The guards detained Mitchell until the police arrived, but despite lifesaving measures, Mitchell, 43, was pronounced dead.
Witnesses who observed the struggle claim that it lasted around 10 minutes or even longer. They also mentioned hearing comments suggesting that Mitchell had allegedly attempted to enter the women's bathroom inside the hotel. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office is treating Mitchell's death as a homicide pending further investigation. An autopsy has been performed, but the cause of death is yet to be determined, pending toxicology reports.
The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office is currently reviewing Mitchell's death as a homicide case. District Attorney John Chisholm expressed condolences to Mitchell's family and stated that their office is actively involved in the investigation. The prosecutor's office provided an update on the investigation to William Sulton, another attorney representing Mitchell's family, who had the opportunity to view video footage and other evidence.
Meanwhile, the security guards involved in the incident have been suspended, according to a Hyatt spokesperson. The Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Milwaukee is a franchise property operated by Texas-based Aimbridge Hospitality. Both companies have expressed condolences to Mitchell's family and loved ones, stating that they are conducting their own investigations and are committed to ensuring accountability.
Hyatt emphasizes that it requires franchisees to adhere to mandatory safety and security standards. Aimbridge Hospitality has assured its full cooperation with law enforcement's ongoing investigation into the incident.
As the investigation unfolds, Mitchell's family continues to seek answers and accountability for his tragic death, while the community eagerly awaits the results of the official inquiries into the actions of the security guards involved.
