This past week has marked a transformative period in Ukraine's ongoing conflict, characterized by significant military actions and strategic shifts. The White House's recent decision to authorize Ukraine to launch US-supplied missiles into Russian territory initiated a swift reaction from Moscow, culminating in a rare experimental missile strike on Dnipro. These developments come at a critical juncture, just ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration in January.

The series of events began with the US giving Ukraine the green light on Sunday to use its missiles against Russia. By Monday, Ukraine had acted on this approval. In a dramatic response, Moscow deployed a new medium-range missile named "Oreshnik" on Thursday. Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that the missile, capable of hypersonic speeds and delivering multiple warheads, could evade all Western air defenses. This confrontation has heightened tensions between the US and Russia, illustrating how deeply involved they are in Ukraine’s conflict.

Earlier in the week, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a controversial move by reaching out to President Putin, breaking a two-year hiatus in dialogue. This attempt to garner support from pro-Russian voters in eastern Germany ahead of a general election was met with public outrage from Ukraine and Poland and quieter disapproval from France and the UK.

Amidst these diplomatic maneuvers, President Joe Biden's authorization was reportedly influenced by the introduction of North Korean troops into the conflict on Russia's side. Russia's use of the Oreshnik missile, which Western officials termed as "experimental" and "medium-range," has further complicated matters. This missile, also known as the "Kedr" by Ukrainian intelligence, was described as a nuclear-capable ballistic missile used in a non-nuclear form, signaling a high level of escalation.

Ukraine's defense intelligence head, Kyrylo Budanov, expressed concerns about the use of the Kedr missile, emphasizing its potential for creating widespread havoc despite being non-serial. The deployment of such advanced weaponry by Russia has injected a new level of anxiety in Kyiv, especially after the sudden closure of the US Embassy due to an aerial threat.

The broader impact of these developments has been a noticeable destabilization along the front lines. The UK Defence Intelligence reported that the situation on the ground is now more volatile than at any point since the invasion began. Russia appears to be making advances in several key areas, including near Kupiansk, the eastern Donbas region, and southern Zaporizhzhia. Additionally, Ukrainian forces are under pressure in the Kursk border area.

With the Biden administration considering sending additional anti-personnel mines and ammunition, the immediate future looks grim. As snow begins to blanket the trenches, there’s a palpable sense of urgency to potentially bolster Ukraine's defenses. However, the current momentum seems to favor Moscow’s territorial gains, setting the stage for a challenging winter.

While the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, the heightened military activity underscores the risks associated with this escalation. With both sides attempting to strengthen their negotiating positions, there's an acute danger that these aggressive maneuvers could further intensify the conflict.
