### Deadly Israeli Airstrike Hits Historic Syrian City of Palmyra

An Israeli airstrike has caused significant destruction and loss of life in Palmyra, Syria, according to reports from the Syrian state news agency, SANA. The airstrike on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of 36 individuals and left over 50 others wounded.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. local time, the attack emanated from the al-Tanf area, targeting residential buildings and an industrial zone within Palmyra, a historic city in the Syrian desert. A military official relayed the severity of the incident, stating that it not only claimed dozens of lives but also inflicted considerable damage on the surrounding infrastructure.

Israel has a long history of conducting airstrikes in Syria, particularly aimed at Iran-linked targets. The frequency and intensity of these strikes have escalated following the recent Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which ignited the ongoing Gaza conflict.

In recent developments, the Israeli military announced that it had targeted transit routes on the Syrian-Lebanese border, which are commonly used for the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah. This follows several reported Israeli attacks in Homs province, which is adjacent to Lebanon and includes the city of Palmyra.

Palmyra itself is renowned for its ancient city, a UNESCO World Heritage site that suffered damage under Islamic State control in 2015 before being reclaimed by the Syrian army. The latest airstrike adds to the historical city’s saga of destruction and suffering.
