Residents across the Denver metro area were greeted by a surprising sight on the last day of May as streets and roads appeared to be covered in snow. However, upon closer inspection, it was evident that the white blanket was actually a result of a severe hailstorm that swept through the area on Thursday night. With hailstones as big as baseballs reported in some cases, the storm left a trail of destruction in its wake.

Numerous reports from FOX31 viewers indicated smashed windshields, flooded streets, and broken windows. Greg Nieto, a journalist from FOX31, found himself in the midst of the storm at a Thornton gas station, where the station truck was hit by hail, resulting in a significant crack in the windshield. Stranded motorists were also forced to take refuge under bridges, hoping to protect their vehicles from being dented.

Even hours after the storm had passed, the aftermath was still evident. Aerial footage from SkyFOX revealed neighborhoods in Thornton and Commerce City covered in several inches of hail, with residents noting that the hail was not melting quickly. The extent of the damage left behind by the hailstorm was captured in a gallery of photos.

The National Weather Service released a list of maximum hail sizes recorded across the state, thanks to spotters. Hailstones ranged from quarter-sized to baseball-sized, with the largest hailstone measuring a staggering 2.75 inches, equivalent to the size of a baseball. The potential damage caused by such large hailstones is significant.

As May comes to an end, mild conditions are forecasted for Friday. However, storms are expected to return to the area, primarily concentrated along the plains. Residents are advised to stay prepared for storms and remain vigilant for any forecast changes. Important weather information, including a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day, can be accessed for the Denver, Colorado region.

The hailstorm that hit the Denver metro area serves as a reminder of the unpredictable weather patterns in Colorado. Taking precautionary measures to protect vehicles and property during hail season is crucial to minimize potential damage.
