Dallas police have recently released a dashcam video capturing the chilling moments leading up to the fatal shooting of Corey Cobb-Bey, the suspect responsible for the death of Officer Darron Burks and the injury of two other officers. The released footage shows Cobb-Bey, armed with a firearm, exiting his vehicle and approaching the officers who had pursued him in Lewisville. Despite repeated commands to drop his weapon, Cobb-Bey continued to advance, prompting officers to open fire.

According to Dallas Police Deputy Chief William Griffith, the incident unfolded on the night of August 29 when Cobb-Bey parked his white Buick in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive at around 10 p.m. Officer Burks arrived shortly after and parked near the facilities of the community organization For Oak Cliff. Cobb-Bey approached Officer Burks and engaged in a brief conversation through the driver's side window of the squad car, seemingly recording the encounter on his cellphone. However, the situation took a tragic turn when Cobb-Bey pulled out a handgun and fatally shot Officer Burks.

As the events unfolded, a police dispatcher noticed an unusual transmission from Officer Burks' radio. Concerned, the dispatcher tried to establish contact, but to no avail. Using GPS, the dispatcher located Burks and dispatched officers to check on him. In the meantime, Cobb-Bey returned to his vehicle, retrieved a shotgun, and placed it on the roof of Burks' squad car.

Responding to the scene, Dallas Police Sr. Cpl. Jamie Farmer arrived at 10:11 p.m., shortly after which Cobb-Bey opened fire, striking Farmer in the leg. Another officer, Sr. Cpl. Karissa David, joined the scene at 10:12 p.m. Cobb-Bey targeted her, firing multiple shots as she exited her vehicle. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Officer David was hit in the face.

As the chaos continued to unfold, Cobb-Bey fled the scene in his vehicle, heading westbound on East Ledbetter Drive before entering I-35 traveling northbound. A pursuit ensued, eventually leading the officers to Lewisville. On the expressway just north of State Highway 121, Cobb-Bey came to a stop, brandishing his shotgun. Ignoring multiple warnings from officers, Cobb-Bey pointed the shotgun at them, prompting the responding officers - Nathaniel Baker, David Lem, Corie Reed, Richard Pace, Vladmir Perez, and Joel Portillo - to unleash a wave of gunfire, striking Cobb-Bey multiple times. He died at the scene, while no officers were injured during the confrontation.

Deemed a "premeditated" incident, investigators have collected evidence from social media platforms to uncover any possible motives behind the shooting. Two shotguns were recovered from the scene in Lewisville, along with two handguns found at the initial crime scene on Ledbetter Drive. The investigation is still ongoing, with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office conducting a separate inquiry into the incident. Notably, this marks the fifth officer-involved shooting involving a Dallas police officer in 2024, raising concerns about the safety of law enforcement officials in the city.

This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by police officers in the line of duty and the unpredictable nature of their encounters. The release of the dashcam footage provides crucial insight into the sequence of events that transpired on that fateful night and will assist investigators in their quest for justice.
