In the wake of Iran's recent drone and missile strikes on Israel, some Czech officials are advocating for a coordinated international response to help Ukraine, which is facing similar attacks from Russia. The call for support to Ukraine comes as Czech politicians draw parallels between the two situations and highlight the need for a unified defensive stance.
Over the weekend, official Israeli reports indicated that Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel, but Israeli forces, supported by allies such as the United States, Britain, Jordan, and France, successfully intercepted 99% of the attacks. This swift international response to protect Israel has prompted some Czech politicians to question why the same level of support is not being extended to Ukraine.
"The Ayatollah's overnight attack on Israel was successfully repelled thanks to a swift international response and a willingness to defend airspace. It is a pity that we do not defend the airspace over Ukraine with the same vigor," expressed Czech European Affairs Minister Martin Dvořák of the coalition party STAN.
Other politicians associated with STAN, such as Danuše Nerudová, the leading candidate for European elections, and Czech MEP Markéta Gregorová, have also echoed the sentiments, emphasizing the need for greater protection for Ukraine in light of the escalating tensions with Russia.
The Czech Prime Minister, Petr Fiala, emphasized the importance of maintaining aid to Ukraine from the United States, stating ahead of his upcoming meeting with President Joe Biden and US Congress representatives, "The US support for Ukraine is absolutely essential."
Meanwhile, Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise has pledged that the US House will proceed with a vote on aid to Israel, following Iran's retaliatory attack, which could potentially pave the way for the approval of aid to Ukraine as well. Previously, Republicans had rejected aid to both Israel and Ukraine due to them being bundled in the same package.
The situation in Ukraine remains a pressing concern, as tensions escalate with Russia. The Czech politicians' calls for significant international support for Ukraine are gaining traction, as they draw attention to the parallel between the recent attacks on Israel and the ongoing attacks on Ukraine by Russia. As discussions unfold, the international community waits to see how these calls for aid will be answered and what actions will be taken to ensure the security and stability of Ukraine in the face of mounting aggression.
