Stewart, in her latest Netflix documentary titled "Martha," had referred to Peyser as dead, a comment that clearly irked the columnist who covered Stewart's 2004 securities fraud trial extensively.
In the documentary, Stewart criticized Peyser for her unflattering portrayal during the trial, saying, "New York Post lady was there just looking so smug. She had written horrible things during the entire trial. But she is dead now, thank goodness." Peyser's coverage at the time included cutting remarks about Stewart’s appearance and behavior, including describing her outfit as resembling “a gardener who moonlights as a dominatrix” and accusing her of playing the victim.
Responding to Stewart’s comments, Peyser issued a statement to USA TODAY, expressing a mix of sarcasm and disbelief. "I should be flattered I lived in her head all these years - and (that) she's (a) faithful Post reader," she stated. Peyser also penned a fiery article for the New York Post, titled: "Hey Martha Stewart, you gloated about the death of a Post columnist - but I'm alive, (expletive)!" She criticized Stewart's ongoing preoccupation with her, remarking, "Even if the Domestic Dominatrix thinks she's finished me off... Two decades later, she's still fantasizing about (plotting?) my grisly demise."
In her article, Peyser further took aim at Stewart's portrayal in the Netflix documentary, describing it as "petty and abusive" and calling Stewart "an obsessive-compulsive so mean." Peyser also noted Stewart's failure to accept responsibility for her actions that led to her five-month federal prison sentence from October 2004 to March 2005, accusing her of being more focused on Peyser than anything else.
Peyser expressed pity for Stewart, acknowledging her talents but criticizing her fixation on past grievances. "She's beautiful, creative and temperamental," she wrote, "yet she remains dangerously preoccupied with little, insignificant me."
This incident is part of a pattern of Stewart rekindling old feuds. Recently, Stewart expressed dissatisfaction with "Martha" director R.J. Cutler for not fully utilizing the access he was given and criticized final scenes in the documentary depicting her in an unflattering light. Moreover, Stewart seemed to have revived her grievance with former friend Ina Garten, alleging that Garten ceased communication when Stewart went to prison.
While Stewart has not yet responded to Peyser's statements, it is clear that the fraught relationship between the iconic lifestyle guru and the New York Post columnist continues to simmer after all these years.
