In a remarkable act of bravery, a Chinese truck driver has been praised for his quick thinking and selfless actions, which prevented more cars from tumbling down a slope on a collapsed highway in southern China. The incident took place in Guangdong province, a significant economic hub, where at least 48 people lost their lives.
Wang Xiangnan, a former soldier and the driver of the truck, was traveling along the highway in the early hours of Wednesday when he noticed several vehicles moving in the opposite direction. Another driver informed him about the collapse, prompting Wang to swiftly position his truck across the highway, effectively blocking the path and preventing dozens of vehicles from venturing into danger.
Speaking to Jiupai News, Wang humbly mentioned, "I didn't think too much. I just wanted to stop the vehicles." Alongside him, his wife courageously got out of the truck to alert other drivers about the hazardous situation.
Wang's heroic actions garnered widespread recognition not only among Chinese social media users but also from the China Worker Development Foundation. In collaboration with a car company, the foundation awarded Wang approximately $1,400, while a charity project associated with tech giant Alibaba Group Holding also contributed an equal amount to his cause.
A humbled Wang expressed his intention to donate the money to the families of the victims affected by the collapse, showcasing his compassion and selflessness in the face of tragedy.
Reports further highlight the presence of another individual who knelt down to prevent cars from proceeding on the highway, illustrating the unity and determination of the people to safeguard lives.
The accident occurred following a month of heavy rains in Guangdong, resulting in the collapse of a section of the highway. As a result, 23 vehicles plunged into a deep ravine and some caught fire, causing thick clouds of smoke. Approximately 30 individuals were hospitalized, with one already being discharged and the others showing signs of improvement. Unfortunately, one person remains in serious condition.
The Meizhou city government in Guangdong has issued a statement announcing citywide checks on expressways, railways, and roads in mountainous areas. A team led by the provincial governor is currently investigating the cause of the collapse.
Wang Xiangnan's heroic actions serve as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the strength of community spirit and the power of selfless acts in the face of adversity.
