The Kansas City Chiefs will be without their top offseason addition, wide receiver Marquise Brown, for the foreseeable future. The team announced on Friday that Brown has been placed on injured reserve and is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair his dislocated sternoclavicular joint in his shoulder.
Brown, affectionately known as "Hollywood," was signed by the Chiefs to a one-year deal worth $7 million during the offseason. Unfortunately, he suffered the SC joint dislocation after catching a pass and being tackled in the Chiefs' first preseason game, a 26-13 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Since then, Brown has been sidelined.
Initially, the Chiefs chose not to place Brown on injured reserve as they finalized their roster for the regular season. However, team trainer Rick Burkholder revealed on Friday that the injury did not heal properly. After a check-up four weeks post-injury, it was discovered that the bone had moved, leading the team to determine that surgery was necessary.
Head coach Andy Reid expressed his disappointment, stating that Brown will be out for "months." Despite the setback, Reid praised Brown as a great player and expressed confidence in his eventual return. Brown's determination and commitment to recovery were also highlighted.
Last season, Brown recorded 51 catches for 574 yards and four touchdowns while playing for the Arizona Cardinals. In his first season with the Cardinals, he had 67 catches for 709 yards and three touchdowns. Previously, he spent his first three seasons in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens, who drafted him in 2019 with the No. 25 overall pick.
In 2021, Brown enjoyed a career-best season, tallying 91 catches for 1,008 yards and six touchdowns. As a result, the Ravens traded him along with a third-round pick to the Cardinals for a higher draft pick. Now, his Chiefs tenure will have to be put on hold as he focuses on recovering from his shoulder surgery.
In a heartfelt social media post, Brown expressed his initial disappointment and frustration about needing surgery but emphasized his faith and trust in God. He acknowledged that while this was not the path he expected, he is accepting of God's plan for him and is eager to get back on the field.
The Chiefs will now have to adapt without their top offseason acquisition and rely on their other wide receiver options to pick up the slack in Brown's absence. The team's training staff will closely monitor Brown's recovery, and there is currently no set timeline for his return.
Despite the setback, the Chiefs and their fans remain hopeful for Brown's swift recovery as they look forward to an exciting football season.
