The Charleston Police Department has concluded its investigation into the death of John Barnett, a longtime employee of Boeing who filed a whistleblower complaint regarding safety concerns. Barnett, 62, was found dead in his truck outside a hotel with a gunshot wound to his head.

According to the police report, there was no evidence of forced entry or a struggle inside the vehicle, and Barnett's key fob was found in his pocket. The Charleston County Coroner's Office ruled the death as a suicide.

Barnett had worked for Boeing for 32 years before retiring in 2017. In his whistleblower complaint, he alleged that the company was using sub-standard parts and had serious issues with oxygen systems. These claims were denied by Boeing.

The police report also revealed that Barnett had a history of mental health challenges, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. It highlighted his ongoing legal battles and the stress he experienced, particularly in relation to his employment at Boeing.

Investigators discovered a notebook in Barnett's truck containing a note expressing his frustration towards Boeing and whistleblower protection. The note also conveyed messages of love to his family and friends.

Boeing issued a brief statement expressing sadness over Barnett's passing and offering condolences to his family and friends. The company asserted that it had addressed the quality issues raised by Barnett before his retirement.

Barnett's death occurred while his whistleblower complaint was being investigated by the United States Department of Labor. The discovery phase of the investigation was ongoing, and hearings were set to begin in June of this year.

Attorneys representing Barnett released documents that detailed alleged retaliation and a "hostile work environment" he faced at Boeing. The documents highlighted instances where Barnett was penalized and removed from investigations after raising concerns about quality and safety issues.

The investigation into Barnett's death included a review of security footage from the hotel, which showed him entering his room alone and later leaving alone before ultimately being found in his truck.

The release of the police findings offers some closure to the investigation into the death of John Barnett, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding his tragic end. As the legal process surrounding his whistleblower complaint continues, his family and loved ones mourn the loss of a dedicated employee and advocate for safety.
