### Bryce Young to Start for Panthers Following Dalton's Car Accident
In an unexpected turn of events, Bryce Young will reclaim his starting quarterback position with the Carolina Panthers this Sunday against the Denver Broncos. This comes after veteran quarterback Andy Dalton sprained his thumb in a car accident on Tuesday. Dalton was traveling with his wife, three children, and their dog when the incident occurred approximately seven miles from Bank of America Stadium.
Head coach Dave Canales informed Young of his starting role late Tuesday evening and made the decision public on Wednesday after Young took all the first-team reps during practice. Young expressed that his initial concern was for Dalton and his family’s safety, rather than his own opportunity to return as a starter.
Bryce Young originally lost his starting position to Dalton after an 0-2 start, during which he threw three interceptions and no touchdowns. While Dalton managed to secure a victory in his debut against the Las Vegas Raiders, he subsequently lost his next four starts, leaving the Panthers with a 1-6 record.
Despite this setback for Dalton, Canales emphasizes Young’s professionalism and readiness. Canales noted that Young remained engaged and constructive during his time on the bench, continually working to improve his game. "He's been an absolute stud," Canales complimented, reflecting on their football discussions and Young’s dedication.
Tuesday's accident, described by Dalton as "scary," particularly affected his children, who were shaken up by the event. Dalton highlighted the importance of seatbelt safety in light of the incident, although he refrained from disclosing specific details about the collision.
Coach Canales mentioned that Dalton's condition will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis, and the hope is for Dalton to serve as a backup on Sunday. However, it’s Bryce Young who will lead the Panthers in their upcoming game.
Curiously, this isn't the first time a car accident has led to a change in the Panthers' quarterback lineup during challenging periods. In 2014, Cam Newton suffered back fractures in an accident, which led to backup quarterback Derek Anderson stepping in and starting one game. The Panthers went on to win the NFC South division that year with a 7-8-1 record.
The Panthers face a pivotal three-game stretch against the Broncos, the New Orleans Saints (2-5), and the New York Giants (2-5) before their bye week. Defensive reinforcements, including outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney who has missed the last two games due to a shoulder injury, are also expected to return this week. Clowney remains optimistic about Young's chance to lead and believes the Panthers can still vie for the division title, currently up for grabs with both Atlanta and Tampa Bay tied at 4-3.
"We've just got to put it together and believe it, buy into it. It's going to happen," Clowney stated, showing confidence in his team’s potential to turn the season around.
