The 74-year-old was being held at Port-Cartier Institution in Quebec when the attack took place, resulting in his hospitalization. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries on Friday, according to a statement from the Correctional Service of Canada.
Pickton gained worldwide notoriety for his involvement in the murder of numerous women, with his case attracting significant media attention. In 2007, he was found guilty of six counts of second-degree murder and received a life sentence, with a maximum parole ineligibility period of 25 years. However, it was believed that he may have been responsible for the deaths of as many as 49 women, as he had allegedly bragged about his crimes to an undercover police agent.
The investigation into Pickton's gruesome activities began over two decades ago, with police conducting a painstaking search of his farm located in the Port Coquitlam suburb of Vancouver. This led to the discovery of 33 sets of human remains or DNA belonging to women who had gone missing, most of whom were involved in prostitution or faced drug addiction. Shockingly, Pickton is said to have confessed to strangling his victims and feeding their remains to his pigs.
The assault on Pickton occurred on May 19th and involved another inmate, a 51-year-old prisoner who is now being held responsible. The Correctional Service of Canada has launched an investigation to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether proper protocols were followed.
Recognizing the impact of Pickton's crimes on communities across Canada, especially Indigenous peoples and the families of victims, the correctional service expressed their condolences and stated that their thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
It is worth noting that only six of Pickton's victims have been officially confirmed, namely Sereena Abotsway, Mona Wilson, Andrea Joesbury, Brenda Ann Wolfe, Papin, and Marnie Frey. However, the scale of his crimes and the impact on the affected communities cannot be underestimated.
As this story unfolds, the death of Robert Pickton brings closure to a dark chapter in Canadian criminal history. The brutality and extent of his crimes will forever be remembered, reminding us of the importance of justice and the ongoing struggle to protect vulnerable individuals in society.
