In an unfortunate incident, California Senate candidate Rep. Adam Schiff fell victim to theft in San Francisco just hours before attending a prestigious campaign dinner. According to The San Francisco Chronicle, thieves broke into Schiff's car, which was parked in a downtown parking garage, and made off with his bags. Despite losing his business attire, Schiff displayed resilience by attending the event in shirt sleeves and a hiking vest, while others were dressed in suits.
The campaign dinner took place at Ristorante Rocca in Burlingame, where Schiff expressed gratitude to attorney Joe Cotchett for his support in Schiff's bid to replace the late Dianne Feinstein and represent California in the U.S. Senate. Cotchett's press agent, Lee Houskeeper, jokingly remarked, "I guess it's 'Welcome to San Francisco.'" However, Schiff remained undeterred, focusing on his appreciation for Cotchett despite the theft.
Speaking about the incident, Schiff revealed, "Yes, they took my bags, but I'm here to thank Joe." This resilient response garnered praise from Cotchett, who stated, "Adam really showed himself tonight. He'll be a great senator - he's going to change the Senate tremendously."
Interestingly, this theft comes only days after an assault on San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan's security guard in downtown San Jose. KRON4, a local Bay Area news outlet, reported that while interviewing Mayor Mahan, a man started shouting and got into a physical altercation with the security guard. The scuffle lasted a few minutes before the man was arrested by the San Jose Police Department. The motive and circumstances behind the incident are currently under investigation.
The incidents involving Schiff and Mayor Mahan's security guard highlight the importance of safety and security for public officials during their campaign activities. These events serve as reminders of the challenges faced by those seeking public office and the need for increased vigilance in their surroundings.
