A Boston police officer working a detail was seriously injured on Thursday when he was struck by a vehicle in the city's North End neighborhood. The incident occurred around 12:41 p.m. near the intersection of North Washington and Thacher streets, according to the Boston police.

The officer, who was in uniform at the time, was assisting a construction vehicle crossing Washington Street when he was hit by the rear of a small dump-truck type commercial vehicle. Boston Police Bureau of Investigative Services Deputy Supt. Paul McLaughlin provided details, stating that the officer had been helping a truck cross the street, heading back towards City Hall when the accident happened. McLaughlin added, "He stopped traffic as the vehicle came through. It struck him, causing him to fall to the ground."

After the incident, investigators were seen examining the tailgate area and bumper of the truck involved. A witness mentioned that the vehicle may have had its door open when it came around a corner.

The injured officer was immediately attended to by paramedics and firefighters at the scene. The witness described seeing the emergency responders working on the officer, initially thinking they were preparing defibrillators. However, the officer was eventually loaded onto a stretcher, fitted with a neck brace, and transported to Mass. General Hospital. Fortunately, the officer's injuries, while serious, were determined to be non-life threatening, and he is currently in stable condition.

Meanwhile, the driver of the commercial vehicle is being questioned by investigators. McLaughlin stated that it is too early in the investigation to determine if any charges will be filed related to the incident. Authorities continue to gather information and evidence to establish a clear understanding of what transpired.

The incident serves as a reminder of the risks that police officers face while performing their duties. The close-knit community of the North End neighborhood has expressed concern and well-wishes for the injured officer's swift recovery.
