In his re-election campaign, President Joe Biden has been strategically emphasizing former President Donald Trump's presidency and campaign statements, aiming to leverage them to his advantage. Biden has recently held fundraisers in Seattle, California, Illinois, and Wisconsin, where he has been reminding voters about Trump's tenure and highlighting his Republican opponent's latest statements.
During a Seattle fundraiser on Friday night, Biden referenced Trump's recent interview with Time magazine, where the former president expressed his belief that states should determine whether to prosecute women for abortions or monitor their pregnancies. Biden urged the audience to read the interview, clearly contrasting his own stance on reproductive rights.
Continuing his campaign trail, Biden has drawn attention to other aspects of Trump's presidency. He highlighted Trump's promise to be a "dictator on Day 1" if re-elected and his controversial view on defending allies from aggression. Biden also mentioned Trump's vow to "totally obliterate the deep state" in the federal bureaucracy, which the former president blamed for obstructing his first-term agenda.
Biden cautioned his audiences, saying, "He means what he says. Unless you think I'm kidding, just think back to the 6th of January." He referred to the Capitol riot earlier this year, implying that Trump's rhetoric had real-life consequences.
While Biden wants the 2024 election to be a referendum on Trump's record and plans, he is not solely relying on this approach. The president also wants voters to view his own policies and actions favorably.
Biden and his allies believe it is crucial to remind the nation about Trump's presidency and his controversial statements, especially since the former president is no longer as visible on social media platforms or in front of television cameras. During a Chicago appearance, Biden described Trump's presidency as chaotic, stating, "Well, we're not going to let them forget."
The president frequently points to Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and his failure to condemn the violent storming of the Capitol. He also criticizes Trump for policies such as separating families at the U.S.-Mexico border, tax cuts benefiting corporations and the wealthy, and repeated attempts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act.
Biden's criticisms of Trump have become sharper in recent speeches. He even playfully referred to Trump as "Sleepy Don" during a Seattle fundraiser, alluding to reports of the former president dozing off during his ongoing criminal trial related to a hush money scheme. Biden also mocks Trump's admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his correspondence with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Furthermore, Biden enjoys making light of Trump's infamous suggestion of using disinfectants to combat COVID-19, jokingly remarking, "That bleach he didn't inject in his body; he just put it in his hair. But look, he's got more hair than I do," which consistently draws laughter from the crowd.
As Biden prepares for his re-election bid, he is strategically utilizing Trump's presidency as a focal point, highlighting its controversial aspects and contrasting them with his own policies and actions. With an emphasis on reminding voters of the past, Biden aims to shape the narrative of the 2024 election.
