The Baltimore Ravens are gearing up for one of the most significant rule changes in recent times, as they prepare for the implementation of the NFL's new Dynamic Kickoff rules. With kickoffs evolving from an exciting fan spectacle to an unknown entity for the 2024 season, the emphasis lies on enhancing excitement while prioritizing player safety.

Ravens Senior Special Teams Coach Randy Brown has been at the forefront of understanding and preparing for these changes, having been one of the few NFL coaches involved in drafting the rule. Working closely alongside Darren Rizzi (Saints), John Fassel (Cowboys), and Richard Hightower (Bears), Brown has been instrumental in shaping the new kickoff rules.

Following an increase in touchback rates from 61% in 2022 to 77% last season, Brown's group collaborated with NFL leadership to address the issue. The result was the creation of the Dynamic Kickoff, which features a unique blend of traditional kickoff elements and offensive sets, complete with various quirks.

One notable adjustment includes the spot for touchbacks, which was initially proposed at the 35-yard line by Brown's group but ultimately altered to the 30-yard line by the NFL Competition Committee, marking a five-yard difference from last season. With the Dynamic Kickoff being implemented on a one-year trial basis, moving it to the 35-yard line could become a possibility if teams continue intentionally kicking the ball into the end zone.

Brown, who has been a special teams coach for 17 seasons, has been advocating for the preservation of the kickoff play, stating, "never wants to lose the foot in football." He believes that embracing change will ensure the play remains relevant, stating, "It's just one more change, that if you're going to do it, rip the Band-Aid off, let's do it. Let's do it and let's make it the best play that it can possibly be."

Ravens Special Teams Coordinator Chris Horton has been delving into XFL film throughout the offseason to better understand the dynamics of the Dynamic Kickoff, which serves as the basis for the new rule. Despite some differences between the two plays, Horton found valuable insights from studying the XFL version.

Horton acknowledges that there are still many unknowns, emphasizing the importance of live, in-game reps during the preseason to gain a clearer understanding of their performance. The Ravens' first preseason game against the Eagles provided valuable insights, with the team winning the battle for better starting field position and showcasing promising returns, including one nearly broken by Rasheen Ali.

As kickoff returns are studied meticulously, adjustments are being made to improve performance. The Ravens are adapting their kickoff strategies, recognizing that this season will bring significant changes to their approach compared to previous years.

With the Dynamic Kickoff offering a vast universe of possibilities, Baltimore's special teams staff remains committed to staying ahead of the curve. They aim to capitalize on every opportunity to gain an advantage, ensuring they are prepared for the upcoming season, starting with their match against the Kansas City Chiefs on September 5th.
