Nebraska authorities are conducting an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred on Friday, leaving four children and three adults injured. The alleged shooter, identified as 74-year-old Billy Booth of Crete, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a nearby home, according to authorities.

The incident took place at approximately 4:33 p.m. on Friday, when multiple reports of an active shooter were received by Saline County 911. Responding officers arrived at the scene and could hear gunfire still occurring. They discovered several victims inside a residence on Crestline Drive and determined that the gunfire originated from a house across the street.

It was reported that around 15 people were present at the victims' residence when the shooting occurred. Swift action from officers and emergency medical technicians enabled the safe evacuation of the injured victims, who were subsequently transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. As of Saturday afternoon, four of the injured individuals have been treated and released, while three victims remain under medical care.

A SWAT team was activated and entered the house where the gunfire originated, located at 1810 Parkland Street, at around 6:40 p.m. Inside, they found the suspect deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A shotgun was discovered near the suspect.

During a news conference, authorities stated that there was no verbal contact between the suspect and the victims leading up to the shooting. However, there had been prior incidents involving the suspect and some of the victims' families. Crete Police Chief Gary Young Jr. revealed that the suspect had made several complaints since 2021 regarding driving behavior and other quality of life issues in the neighborhood.

Earlier this year, a report was filed by the victims alleging that the suspect had made offensive gestures, told them to go home or back to where they came from, and to speak English. The responding officer had interviewed both parties involved, but the family declined to pursue prosecution at the time. Young Jr. mentioned that additional contacts were made between the suspect and the family, leading the family to indicate that they would involve the police if the situation worsened.

When asked about a potential racial component, Young Jr. acknowledged that there could be one, given the context of the suspect's remarks. However, the motive behind the shooting has not yet been established, and the investigation is ongoing.

Authorities revealed that the injuries sustained by the victims were consistent with shotgun blast injuries, as a shotgun disperses multiple pellets upon discharge. While the number of people struck by the pellets was relatively high, law enforcement officials believe that all of the victims will survive.

Further details about the victims and the progress of the investigation are yet to be released by the Nebraska State Patrol.
