In a turn of events from the shocking 2022 attack on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi, the man convicted of breaking into their San Francisco home and assaulting him with a hammer will soon face his federal prison sentence. David DePape, who was found guilty in November 2023 for the break-in and attack, will be sentenced on Friday, bringing some closure to the distressing incident.

According to the criminal complaint, DePape confessed that he had intended to question Nancy Pelosi about Russian influence on the 2016 election and had planned to hold her hostage. However, only Paul Pelosi was present at the residence when DePape broke in. In his testimony, Paul Pelosi revealed that DePape repeatedly questioned him about Nancy's whereabouts before striking him with a hammer, causing severe injuries, including a skull fracture.

During the trial, DePape expressed remorse for the harm caused to Paul Pelosi, stating that his plan had been thwarted. Federal prosecutors, however, are seeking a substantial penalty of 40 years in prison for DePape's conviction on charges including attempted kidnapping of a federal officer or employee and assault of an immediate family member of a federal official. "The defendant planned a violent hostage-taking of the Speaker Emerita, and then nearly killed her husband," stated prosecutors in a sentencing memorandum, highlighting the severity of his actions.

Emphasizing the gravity of the offense, the prosecutors argued against any leniency towards DePape, stating that his intention to teach violent lessons was not acceptable in the United States. They stressed that the imposed sentence must align with the nature and circumstances of the crime.

In addition to the federal charges, DePape is also facing state charges, including attempted murder. He has pleaded not guilty, and his state trial is set to begin on May 22, ensuring that he faces justice for his actions on both levels.

As the day for the federal sentencing nears, the public eagerly awaits the outcome, hoping for a just and appropriate punishment for the attacker of Paul Pelosi.
