In response to the protests against the war in Gaza on Thursday, armed law enforcement officers were present at the Ohio Union at the Ohio State University after 10 p.m. to support the state troopers who were engaged in using force against the demonstrators. The university spokesperson, Ben Johnson, clarified that prior to this escalation, there were no armed officers on the Ohio Union's roof with weapons pointed at the protesters.

According to Johnson, once the troopers began using force at around 10 p.m., the state troopers on the roof switched to long-range firearms as part of their standard safety protocol. The Ohio State Highway Patrol provided overwatch support for the demonstration, which is a regular safety measure they employ when handling large gatherings.

While specific public safety protocols were not discussed, Johnson's statement emphasized that the armed officers on the roof would only employ their firearms reactively to ensure the safety of everyone present, including the demonstrators. The intention was to protect and maintain order rather than provoke further conflict.

The presence of armed officers highlights the escalation of tensions and the growing concern over the intensity of the protests. It also underscores the steps taken by law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of both the protestors and the wider community.

However, it is important to note that prior to the use of force, the officers did not display their weapons openly. The deployment of long-range firearms only occurred once arrests were underway and force was being exercised by the troopers.

The university spokesperson's statement sought to address the use of force and the presence of armed officers in a broader context, highlighting the standard safety measures taken during large gatherings. The situation serves as a reminder of the complex dynamics that can arise during protests and the delicate balance between maintaining public safety and respecting the rights of demonstrators.

As the protests continue, it remains to be seen how these events will shape the ongoing dialogue and actions regarding the war in Gaza and the right to peacefully protest.
